Summertime is always the best of what might be.— Charles Bowden

As the summer approaches and the humidity rises, Bicentennial Park in Belleville, Illinois becomes a solution for keeping kids cool, active, and entertained.
Today marked the opening of splash pad season and within minutes, the sound of laughter, running feet, and spraying water filled the park.
Kids raced through colorful arches, danced through fountains, made instant friendships, and completely forgot about screens for a while. Parents gathered nearby watching summer unfold in real time.

What I love most about community spaces like this is how they quietly bring people together. Different families. Different backgrounds. Same joy.
As a photographer, moments like these remind me why I’ve been falling back in love with documenting real life. Not perfectly posed moments, but honest ones. The kind you look back on years later and can still feel.

And judging by the smiles, soaked swimsuits, and kids begging to stay “five more minutes,” I’d say splash pad season is officially back in Belleville.
